You are scheduled to load 3700 tons of cargo, 45 tons of crew effects and stores and 427 tons of fuel. Use the blue pages of the Stability Data Reference Book to determine the vessel's mean draft in fresh water.
• Using the blue pages hydrostatic tables to relate displacement and draft • Calculating total weight added (cargo + stores + fuel) and adding it to the starting displacement • Correcting a salt water draft to fresh water draft using the data or allowance in the tables
• What is the total weight you are adding, and what is the ship’s displacement before loading (from the previous condition in the exam booklet)? • Once you know the new displacement, where in the blue pages can you find the corresponding mean draft in salt water, and how do you interpolate between table entries if needed? • After finding the salt water draft, how does the reference book tell you to adjust it to get the fresh water mean draft?
• Be sure you are using the correct vessel’s Displacement vs. Draft table in the blue pages (salt water values). • Double‑check that you added all three weights (cargo, crew effects/stores, and fuel) to the correct initial displacement from the problem setup. • Confirm you applied the salt-to-fresh water correction in the direction (and amount) indicated in the stability data, not the other way around.
