You are scheduled to load 3200 tons of cargo, 45 tons of crew effects and stores and 323 tons of fuel. Use the blue pages of the Stability Data Reference Book to determine the vessel's mean draft in salt water.
• Deadweight calculation (sum of cargo, fuel, crew effects and stores) • Using the Deadweight Scale / Displacement vs. Draft tables in the blue pages • Difference between salt water and fresh water drafts
• First, what total weight are you adding to the vessel before loading (lightship vs. loaded)? • Once you know the total displacement, where in the blue pages do you look to match that displacement with a mean draft? • How do you confirm the draft you select is for salt water, not fresh water or another condition?
• Carefully add all weights: cargo + crew effects and stores + fuel (watch the units: tons vs. long tons if shown) • Verify you are using the correct vessel and the correct deadweight/displacement table in the blue pages • Double-check that the draft you read off the table is explicitly labeled for salt water and that you are reading the mean draft, not forward or aft draft
