You are on watch and receive word that a person has fallen overboard from the starboard side. What should your first action be?
• Man Overboard (MOB) procedures and the importance of immediate reactions • The purpose of the initial action versus actions taken a few seconds later (helm, engines, notifications) • The need to alert the entire ship quickly so everyone can respond
• Which single action most quickly involves the whole crew and focuses the ship’s resources on recovering the person? • Which options affect only the ship’s movement, and which option also ensures lookouts, rescue gear, and bridge team can react? • Think about standard emergency procedures: in what order do you usually see ‘raise the alarm, then…’?
• Verify which choice is specifically meant to warn and mobilize everyone on board, not just change course or speed • Check which option is clearly identified in standard MOB procedures as the immediate first step • Make sure the action you choose would not delay others from starting lookout, throwing life rings, and preparing rescue equipment
