Which pump illustrated is fitted with a suction strainer? See illustration GS-0042.
• Look for the piping symbol that represents a suction strainer in the legend or near pump suctions • Trace the suction lines to each of these: bilge pump, ballast pump, and general service pump • Think about which systems are most likely to pick up debris or sediment from tanks or bilges and therefore require strainers
• On the diagram, where do you see a screen/strainer symbol drawn directly on the suction side of any of the pumps listed? • Do all three pumps have the same suction arrangement, or can you see an extra component on the suction side of only one (or some) of them? • If a tank or space normally carries dirty water, mud, or loose scale, which connected pump suction would designers be most careful to protect with a strainer?
• Verify you can clearly identify and label on the print the bilge pump, ballast pump, and general service pump • For each of these pumps, follow the suction line backward and check if there is a distinct strainer symbol just before the pump inlet • Confirm whether that symbol appears on only one, some, or all of the pumps’ suction lines before choosing your answer
