Which publication requires infrequent corrections?
• Update frequency and purpose of List of Lights, Coast Pilot, Radio Navigational Aids, and Sailing Directions (Planning Guide) • Difference between publications used for tactical, day-to-day navigation vs long-range voyage planning • Which publications change often due to local conditions (buoys, lights, regulations) and which change slowly (routes, ocean-wide planning info)
• For each option, ask yourself: Is this used close to land for detailed navigation, or for broad, strategic voyage planning? • Which type of information tends to change more often: local aids to navigation and regulations, or major ocean routes and general planning data? • Think about which book you would expect to check every time you sail a coast, versus which you might only need to recheck when planning a new ocean passage.
• Identify which publication is primarily for harbor/coastal navigation — that one usually needs frequent corrections • Identify which publication contains worldwide/ocean-wide planning information, not detailed local buoy data • Before choosing, ask: "Would neglecting frequent updates in this book likely put me at immediate risk near the coast?" If yes, it probably does not require infrequent corrections.
