Which line cannot be spliced?
• Differences between laid (twisted) line and braided line constructions • How hollow braid and double-braid splices are commonly made in practice • What happens when a braided cover is built over a solid core that is not load-sharing
• For each choice, ask yourself: do standard splicing methods exist for this type of line, and are they practical for mariners to do? • Think about which construction actually allows you to tuck the strands or bury the standing part back into the rope itself. • Consider whether the core and cover both carry load, and how that affects your ability to form an eye or join without cutting critical fibers.
• Make sure you know the difference between hollow core and solid core in braided ropes. • Ask: can I open up the interior of this rope enough to bury the tail and lock the splice? • Eliminate any option that says any line can be spliced—is that really true for all constructions you’ve seen or worked with?
