When fighting the fire depicted in figure 1 of the illustration, which letter denotes where the attack hose line would be used? See illustration SF-0013.
• Fire attack hose line placement in relation to fire location and smoke flow • Difference between a ventilation opening (where smoke exits) and an access door (where firefighters enter) • Advancing a hose line from the area of clean air toward the fire, while keeping an escape route
• Look at the red arrows in Figure 1: from which direction is heat and smoke moving, and where is it exiting the space? • Which letter marks the safest point for firefighters to enter the compartment on the same deck as the fire, rather than at a vent or exhaust outlet? • If you had to back out quickly, from which lettered position would you still have a relatively smoke-free passage behind you?
• Identify which letters are clearly at vent/exhaust openings where smoke is leaving the space; these are usually poor places to advance an attack line from. • Identify which letter is at a door on the fire deck that gives you access to the fire compartment while still starting in relatively clear air. • Confirm that your chosen letter allows the hose team to advance toward the fire, not directly into the main smoke flow and with an escape route behind them.
