What was the course made good from 0630 to 0654?
• Course made good (CMG) is the actual track over the ground between two known positions • Use the 0630 and 0654 positions on the chart or plotting sheet to find the direction of that track • Convert the direction of the line between the two positions to a true course (°T) using the compass rose
• Have you carefully plotted the vessel’s position at 0630 and at 0654, then drawn a straight line from the earlier to the later position? • When you lay your parallel rulers or triangle on that line and walk them to the compass rose, what true direction does the line indicate? • Are you using the correct outer or inner scale on the compass rose for true (not magnetic) directions?
• Verify you are measuring from 0630 to 0654 (earlier to later), not the other way around • Confirm you are reading true degrees (°T) on the compass rose, not magnetic or compass • Double‑check that your plotted positions are correct and that you’re not accidentally using the ship’s intended course instead of the actual track between fixes
