What should be given, as a minimum, to personnel who are involved in crane cargo handling?
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements during cargo handling • Risks from falling objects, pinching, and crushing when working with cranes • Difference between routine PPE for deck/cargo work and special gear for cold water survival or going aloft
• Which of these items protect you from the most common and likely injuries when working directly under or around a crane with suspended loads? • Is every option listed something that would normally and routinely be worn during cargo operations, or are some items only for special or unusual situations? • Think about typical port cargo handling: what are all the crew and longshoremen definitely required to wear around the crane and pallets?
• Identify which choice (or choices) address head, hand, and foot protection from falling or shifting cargo. • Consider whether survival suits are standard gear for crane work, or only for emergencies in cold water. • Check if a life preserver for going aloft is a normal requirement when you’re secured by other fall protection instead.
