What is the relative bearing of an object on the port beam?
• Relative bearing is measured from the ship’s bow (000°) clockwise through 360° • The port beam is directly out on the port (left) side of the vessel • The starboard beam is directly out on the starboard (right) side of the vessel
• From dead ahead (000°), if you turn clockwise to look directly to starboard, what relative bearing is that? • If starboard beam is that bearing, what bearing is directly opposite it on the port side, still measuring clockwise from the bow? • How many degrees around the circle must you go from 000°, measuring clockwise, to be looking straight out the port side?
• Confirm that relative bearings are always measured clockwise from the bow, 000° to 359° • Identify the relative bearing of the starboard beam first, then find the opposite side • Make sure the bearing you select represents a direction 90° off the bow, but on the port side, not starboard
