What is a "sheepshank" used for?
• Different purposes of common knots and bends • How sailors temporarily adjust the effective length of a line • Which knots are used for protection vs. joining vs. securing
• Look at each choice and match it to a knot you already know by name and function (for example: what knot is usually used to keep a line from fraying?) • Think about situations on a vessel when you might need a line to be effectively shorter without cutting it • Consider whether a sheepshank is meant to be permanent or temporary, and which of the choices best fits a temporary solution
• Be clear on the difference between shortening a line versus stopping off or securing a line • Recall which specific knot is used to prevent fraying at the end of a line (is that called a sheepshank?) • Remember what type of knot or bend is normally used to join lines of unequal size and compare that name to sheepshank
