Using the information in Section 1, the blue pages, of the Stability Data Reference Book, determine the danger angle for permanent list if the KG is 22.4 feet and the drafts are: FWD 15'-03", AFT 15'-09".
• KG (height of center of gravity) and how it is used with displacement to enter the blue pages tables • How to obtain the ship’s displacement from mean draft using the hydrostatic data before going to stability tables • Difference between danger angle for list and range of stability / maximum righting arm
• What is the first value you must determine from the drafts before you can use the blue pages: is it displacement, trim, GM, or something else? • Once you know the displacement and KG, where in the blue pages do you look to find a danger angle, and how do you interpolate if your exact values are not listed? • Think about whether a higher KG (less stable vessel) will generally give you a larger or smaller danger angle for permanent list.
• Be sure you have calculated the mean draft correctly from the given forward and aft drafts before entering any table • Verify you are using the table that specifically lists danger angle for list vs. KG and displacement, not a table for maximum righting arm or range of stability • Check whether your KG and displacement fall between tabulated values and whether the question expects you to interpolate or choose the closest tabulated angle.
