Under normal circumstances, what do you do if the transmitter aboard your ship is operating off-frequency, overmodulating or distorting?
• Safe and proper operation of radio transmitting equipment per FCC/USCG practices • The effect of an off-frequency or distorted transmission on other stations and safety communications • The operator’s immediate duty when equipment is clearly not functioning correctly
• If your transmitter is interfering with other users or clearly malfunctioning, what is your first responsibility before anything else? • Which option directly addresses preventing further interference or unsafe operation, rather than just documenting or partially adjusting it? • Ask yourself: does changing power or volume actually fix an off‑frequency or distortion problem, or just change how bad transmissions are sent out?
• Identify which choice prevents further harmful or unclear transmissions right away. • Separate actions that correct or isolate the problem from actions that merely record that a problem exists. • Verify which control (power, volume, logging, or ceasing operation) actually deals with an off‑frequency, overmodulating, or distorting condition.
