The tankship Northland is loaded as shown in table BL-0004 below. Use the salmon-colored pages in the Stability Data Reference Book to determine the hogging numeral.
• Hogging vs. sagging – understand which condition the ship is in based on where the heavy and light weights are • How to use the longitudinal bending stress (numeral) tables in the salmon-colored pages for each tank/space • The process of adding numerals for loaded compartments and leaving out empty ones (zeros) to find the total hogging numeral
• Looking at BL-0004, where are the biggest numerals located – more toward the bow, midship, or stern, and how does that affect hogging versus sagging? • Which rows on BL-0004 actually contribute to the hogging numeral, and which can you ignore when you total the numerals? • After you total the applicable numerals, are you comparing your sum directly to the answer choices, or do you need to round to two decimal places as shown in the reference book?
• Verify that you only use numerals from tanks/compartments that are shown as loaded in the table – any space with 0 is not contributing. • Double-check that you are reading the correct column (hogging numerals, not sagging numerals) for each space in the salmon-colored pages. • Confirm your final sum and rounding match the format of the choices (xx.xx numeral).
