The illustrated valve "A" needs to be repaired due to a leak across the valve disk. To repair the valve you should __________. See illustration GS-0140.
• Study the numbered parts in Figure A around the valve disk and seat area (items 10–14). • Think about the difference between a replaceable disk/seat insert and the valve body seat machined into the body. • Consider what kind of repair is normally done for a leak across the disk in a globe valve: do you change packing/bonnet, disk insert, or body seat?
• Which numbered part is actually the disk or disk insert that presses against the seat, and which part is the body seat it seals against? • If the leak is across the disk, does that point to a problem with the packing, bonnet, stem threads, or the sealing surfaces between disk and seat? • Looking at how the disk is attached, is it designed to be removed and renewed without replacing the entire valve body?
• Identify on the drawing which piece is the replaceable part on the disk and which is the body seat. • Confirm which option talks about renewing the disk-side sealing component rather than the bonnet, stem, or packing. • Be sure the choice you pick matches what is practical shipboard maintenance (least invasive repair that fixes the leak path).
