The diesel engine shown in the illustration, the exhaust manifold is indicated by the letter __________. Illustration MO-0003
• Identify the exhaust flow path from the cylinder to the turbocharger or stack • Distinguish between air intake/scavenge spaces and exhaust passages in a two-stroke diesel • Remember that the exhaust manifold collects hot gases from the cylinder head before they reach the turbocharger
• Start at the exhaust valve/port area at the top of the cylinder and trace where the burned gases would first go after leaving the cylinder—what labeled part do they enter? • Compare the shapes and locations of the labeled parts: which one looks like a common passage serving multiple cylinders rather than a single component? • Look at the part connected directly to the turbine side of the turbocharger (labeled A). Which letter marks the duct or chamber that supplies exhaust gas to it?
• Verify which labeled part is on the hot exhaust side rather than the cooler air side • Confirm that the part you choose would logically be common to several cylinders, not just one • Make sure the part you select is upstream of the turbocharger (before the turbine), not downstream or on the air intake side
