Regarding the turbocharger shown in the illustration, the piece labeled "F" is a __________. See illustration MO-0080.
• Turbocharger compressor layout: inlet → impeller (rotating) → diffuser (stationary blades) → volute • Difference between rotating impeller blades and stationary guide/diffuser vanes • Where a variable inlet guide vane assembly is usually located in relation to the compressor wheel
• Look closely at how the part labeled "F" is connected: is it mounted to the rotating shaft/impeller, or is it part of the stationary casing? • In the airflow path on the compressor side, what component comes immediately after the spinning compressor wheel, and what is its job? • If "F" were a silencer, where would you expect it to be located relative to the air inlet and outlet, and would it normally have blade-like passages?
• Verify whether "F" turns with the shaft or remains fixed with the housing/casing. • Check if "F" is positioned at the inlet to the compressor or just after the impeller outlet, where velocity is converted to pressure. • Confirm whether the geometry of "F" looks like individual blades/vanes forming passages, or like an acoustic chamber/silencer with baffles.
