Preferably when should the bridge be informed when engine room situations may affect the speed, maneuverability, power supply, or other essentials for the safe operation of the ship?
• Bridge–engine room communication during normal and abnormal conditions • How loss or reduction of speed, maneuverability, or power affects collision avoidance and compliance with the Navigation Rules • The importance of advance warning for the Officer of the Watch to plan safe navigation
• If the ship suddenly loses or changes power without the bridge expecting it, what risks does that create in traffic, narrow channels, or close-quarters situations? • Which option gives the Officer of the Watch the maximum time to adjust course, speed, or make VHF/whistle signals if needed? • Think about emergency situations: would you rather the bridge learns about a limitation before, during, or after it affects the ship’s handling?
• Which choice best supports early, proactive communication instead of reactive reporting? • Which option most clearly helps the bridge keep the ship compliant with COLREGS/Navigation Rules regarding safe speed and avoiding collision? • Eliminate any answers where the bridge is left to "figure it out" by observing changes instead of being told in advance.
