INTERNATIONAL ONLY Vessels "A" and "B" are meeting on a river as shown in illustration D041RR below and will pass 1/4 mile apart. If you are on vessel "A", in addition to the sidelight, which other light(s) will you see on vessel "B"?
• International Rules – towing lights vs. Inland special flashing light • Lights for a power-driven vessel when pushing ahead / towing alongside (masthead lights) • Which lights are visible from ahead vs. only from astern (towing lights and sternlights)
• First, decide what kind of vessel/tow combination vessel "B" represents based on the illustration. Is it pushing ahead, towing astern, or something else? • Under the International Rules, think about which extra lights that type of towing vessel must carry and in which directions those lights shine. • From the relative positions of A and B, ask yourself: are you seeing B from ahead, on the bow, or from astern? Which of B’s lights are actually visible from that sector?
• Under International Rules, a special flashing yellow light is or is not required? Confirm which set of rules uses that light. • Verify the color and sector (arc of visibility) of towing lights and whether they can be seen from ahead or only from astern. • Check what additional masthead lights a power-driven vessel engaged in pushing ahead/towing alongside must show, and whether those are visible from vessel A’s position.
