INLAND ONLY You are on vessel "A", and vessel "B" desires to overtake you on your starboard side as shown in illustration D031RR below. After the vessels have exchanged one blast signals what action should you take?
• INLAND Rule 34 – Maneuvering and Warning Signals for overtaking situations • Difference between overtaking vessel and vessel being overtaken (Rule 13) • Responsibilities of the stand-on vessel once whistle signals have been exchanged and agreement is reached
• Ask yourself: In an overtaking situation, which vessel is supposed to keep clear, and which one should maintain her course and speed? • If both vessels have already exchanged one-blast signals, what does that mean has been agreed between them under the Inland Rules? • Would a sudden course or speed change by the vessel being overtaken help, or could it create doubt or confusion after signals are agreed?
• Verify which vessel is the give-way vessel in an overtaking situation under Rule 13. • Confirm what one short blast Inland means when an overtaking vessel wants to pass on your starboard side. • Check what the Rules say the stand-on vessel should normally do after agreeing to a maneuvering signal: change course/speed, or keep them steady?
