INLAND ONLY Which lights are required for a single barge being towed alongside?
• Inland Navigation Rules – Rule 24 (Towing and Pushing), especially paragraphs dealing with pushed ahead and alongside tows • Difference between special flashing light (Inland-only light on tows) and a towing light (yellow over white or yellow astern) • Which lights are shown by the tug versus which are shown by the barge itself
• First decide: in an alongside tow, does the barge itself ever show a towing light, or is that light only on the tug’s stern? • Ask yourself what the special flashing light is used to indicate in the Inland Rules, and on which part of a towing arrangement it appears. • Consider whether a barge alongside needs to show a stern light of its own, or if the tug’s stern light covers the whole unit.
• Look up Inland Rule 24 (g) and see exactly which lights are prescribed for a single barge alongside. • Verify the definition and placement of a special flashing light in the Inland Rules (color, arc of visibility, and location). • Confirm whether the barge’s required lights are only sidelights plus one additional light, or sidelights plus two different stern‑area lights.
