INLAND ONLY The term "Great Lakes", as defined by the Inland Rules of the Road, does NOT include which choice?
• Inland Navigation Rules – Definition of “Great Lakes” (see 33 CFR 83.03 for formal wording) • The phrase “Great Lakes and their connecting and tributary waters” and what rivers are legally included • Geographic location of each listed river and whether it actually connects to the Great Lakes system
• Look up how the Inland Rules legally define Great Lakes – does the definition stop at the lakes themselves, or does it extend into named rivers and connecting waters? • For each answer choice, ask: Is this river physically part of, or directly connected to, the Great Lakes system as recognized in the Inland Rules? • Think about which option is clearly outside the Great Lakes geographic region, even if you’re not sure about the detailed legal wording.
• Verify in the definition whether Calumet River and Chicago River are mentioned or obviously within the Chicago–Lake Michigan area. • Check how far into the Saint Lawrence River the Great Lakes definition extends under the Inland Rules (there is a specific limit point). • Confirm the location of the Atchafalaya River and whether it has any connection to the Great Lakes or is part of a completely different inland waterway system.
