In what location is heavy fuel oil kept below the flash point?
• Flash point vs. operating temperature of heavy fuel oil systems • Purpose and typical temperature of settling/day tanks compared with heaters and mixing tanks • Where in the fuel system oil is intentionally heated close to or above normal operating temperatures
• Think about which part of the heavy fuel system is designed mainly for storage and gravity feed, and which parts are designed specifically for heating the fuel for purification and injection. • Ask yourself: in which component would it be unsafe or impractical to have the oil at or above its flash point during normal operation? • Consider the temperature levels: where is the fuel just being held ready for use, and where is it being heated to lower viscosity for purifiers or engines?
• Identify which tank(s) are primarily storage/settling versus heating/conditioning components. • Recall that flash point is a safety property: you normally want storage areas cooler than this temperature. • Verify which outlet locations (from heaters) are likely to have fuel at the highest temperature in the system.
