In the turbocharger shown in the illustration, the engine exhaust line would be connected to the part labeled __________. See illustration MO-0080.
• Trace the gas flow path through a turbocharger: exhaust gas vs. intake air • Distinguish between the turbine side (driven by hot exhaust) and the compressor side (handles cool intake air) • Look for the inlet volute and flange where a pipe from the engine exhaust manifold would physically bolt on
• On which side of the illustration are the turbine blades located, and which casings surround them? • If exhaust gas must first strike the turbine wheel, which labeled area is the first enclosed passage it would enter from the engine? • Which labeled connection looks like a piping flange intended to receive hot exhaust gas, as opposed to taking in fresh air or discharging compressed air?
• Verify that the label you choose is on the turbine (exhaust) side, not the compressor (air) side • Confirm that the selected label represents the entry point/scroll leading into the turbine wheel, not the outlet after it has expanded • Make sure the connection you pick is one where an external engine exhaust pipe could reasonably be bolted on (look for a flange or opening)
