In the illustration, the sea anchor is shown as item number __________. See illustration SF-0042.
• A sea anchor (drogue) is a cone- or parachute-shaped device streamed in the water to slow the drift of the raft • In the illustration, distinguish between the boarding ladder, the painter line, and the sea anchor at the far end of a line • Item numbers near the outer end of the long line away from the raft identify the sea anchor and its components
• First, locate the long line leading away from the liferaft and follow it all the way to its outer end—what item number is next to the cone-shaped object there? • Compare the item numbers near the ladder and near the coiled line on deck—are those labeling the line itself or the drag device at the very end? • Ask yourself which numbered item is clearly attached to the cone-shaped drag device, not to the line or the raft body
• Verify you have correctly identified the cone/parachute-shaped drogue in the water, separate from the raft and ladder • Double-check that you’re reading the item number closest to the cone, not one pointing to the coiled line or its free end • Confirm you are not confusing the boarding ladder or other fittings on the raft with the drag device that creates resistance in the water
