If operating within Ocean Area A1, and outside of NAVTEX coverage, a GMDSS-equipped vessel must carry:
• GMDSS sea areas and what "Ocean Area A1" specifically means • How Maritime Safety Information (MSI) must be received when outside NAVTEX coverage • Differences between Inmarsat EGC/HF NBDP, DSC watchkeeping, and general navigation equipment like GPS
• Focus on which option directly addresses the requirement to receive Maritime Safety Information (MSI) in an area where NAVTEX is not available but you are still in A1 waters. • Ask yourself: does the regulation here require a general navigation aid, a watchkeeping frequency, a specific satellite terminal, or an MSI reception capability? • Compare which choices are about MSI reception versus those that serve other functions under GMDSS (distress alerting, position fixing, etc.).
• Verify which GMDSS methods are approved for MSI reception when NAVTEX is unavailable for your operating area. • Confirm the definition and equipment requirements for Sea Area A1 under GMDSS and what additional carriage is required when another MSI system (like NAVTEX) is not in range. • Check which listed systems are mandatory GMDSS MSI systems versus optional or alternative communications/navigation equipment.
