Consideration should be given in planning for the mooring orientation in a new location so that in adverse weather a crane is available to off-load the supply vessel on what side of the unit?
• Relative wind terms: upwind, leeward, weather side, crosswind side • How wind and seas affect a supply vessel alongside a fixed unit or platform • Safe crane operations in adverse weather and which side gives best protection and control
• Picture the wind direction and the unit (platform) first. Where will the waves and spray be the worst? • If the supply vessel is alongside and the wind increases, which side of the unit will give the vessel more shelter and steady positioning for crane operations? • Which orientation reduces the risk of the vessel being pushed hard against the structure or having its crane load swing dangerously?
• Make sure you clearly understand leeward side vs. weather side (windward side) • Think about which side is more sheltered from wind and sea for safer lifting operations • Eliminate any option where the vessel would be exposed to direct wind and seas during off‑loading in bad weather
