BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND You hear the firing of a gun at one-minute intervals from another vessel. What does this signal indicate?
• Distress signals listed in the Navigation Rules (Annex IV – Distress Signals) • Difference between maneuvering/passing sound signals and distress or warning signals • The meaning of repeated signals at regular one-minute intervals
• Is the firing of a gun at ONE-MINUTE intervals a normal method of communicating passing intentions, or is it reserved for a special situation? • Which type of signal is more likely to involve a weapon (gun): routine navigation, area clearance, or an emergency situation? • Look at the time spacing: would a passing signal normally be repeated once every minute, or is that pattern used for something more serious?
• Check Annex IV of the Navigation Rules for recognized distress signals and see what it says about firing a gun at regular intervals • Confirm how maneuvering and warning sound signals are normally made (what device is used and what patterns are specified) • Verify whether any rule uses a gun to mean “all clear” or “clear the area” in standard Navigation Rules
