BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND You are underway on vessel "B" approaching vessel "A" as shown in illustration D038RR below. You are unable to see any sidelights on vessel "A". What type of situation is this?
• Rule 13 – Overtaking (Navigation Rules): how sidelights and stern light define when you are overtaking • The arc of visibility of sidelights vs. stern light (112.5° from dead ahead; 135° astern) • Difference between crossing (Rule 15), meeting (Rule 14), and overtaking (Rule 13) situations based on relative bearings
• From vessel "B", if you cannot see any sidelights on vessel "A", what light (or light sector) must you be in relative to vessel "A"? • Look at the direction of travel of both vessels in the illustration: are you generally ahead of "A", directly opposite, or coming up from behind? • Which Rule (13, 14, or 15) is triggered when you are within the sector where only the stern light of the other vessel should be visible?
• Verify the angles of visibility: sidelights show from dead ahead to 22.5° abaft the beam; the stern light shows 135° centered on the stern. • Check whether vessel "B" lies more than 22.5° abaft the beam of vessel "A" in the picture. • Confirm which situation (crossing, meeting, overtaking) applies when you are within the stern light sector and not within either sidelight sector.
