BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND You are underway in a narrow channel and are being overtaken by a vessel astern. The overtaking vessel sounds a signal indicating her intention to pass you on your starboard side. If such an action appears dangerous, which signal are you required to sound?
• Rule 34 – Maneuvering and Warning Signals in narrow channels • Difference between agreement signals and danger/doubt signals • How the stand-on vessel being overtaken must respond if she thinks the maneuver is unsafe
• First, decide: are you being asked for a signal of agreement or for a signal that says “I do NOT agree / it’s unsafe”? • Ask yourself: does the rule require a special pattern signal or the general danger signal when you think the overtaking is unsafe? • Consider what signal is used in both International and Inland Rules to mean “I doubt your intentions or it’s dangerous to proceed”.
• Verify in Rule 34 what sound means “I am in doubt about your action or it seems dangerous”. • Confirm that this danger/doubt signal is the same in both International and Inland. • Make sure you do NOT pick the signal used to agree to an overtaking maneuver in a narrow channel.
