BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND Which light(s) is/are required for a vessel being towed?
• Rule 24 – Towing and Pushing in the Navigation Rules • Difference between lights shown by the towing vessel and the vessel being towed • Which lights are related to who is doing the towing versus who is being towed
• Ask yourself: which vessel actually carries the towing light—the tug or the tow? • Think about what basic navigation lights every power‑driven vessel underway must show, even if it is being towed. • Consider whether a vessel being towed would need a masthead light, or if that is only for the vessel providing propulsion.
• Verify in Rule 24 which lights are listed under the vessel or object being towed subsection, not the tug. • Confirm whether a towing light (yellow astern light) belongs to the tug or the tow. • Check what minimum running lights (sidelights, stern light, masthead light) are required for a power‑driven vessel underway but not making way on its own because it’s in tow.
