BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND Which lights are shown by a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver to indicate that the vessel is making way?
• Rule 27 – Restricted in her ability to maneuver (lights) in the Navigation Rules • The difference between a vessel underway but not making way and underway and making way • Which lights are the normal running lights for a vessel underway (power or sail)
• First, picture the basic special lights that identify a vessel as restricted in her ability to maneuver. Then, think about what extra lights (if any) are required when she starts moving through the water. • Ask yourself: when any vessel is making way through the water (actually moving), which additional lights must be shown aft and on the sides to indicate her motion and heading? • Compare each choice to the full set of lights a RAM vessel underway and making way would show: special status lights PLUS what? Which option correctly represents the standard underway running lights?
• Verify from Rule 27 that a restricted‑ability vessel, when making way, must show her masthead light(s), sidelights, and sternlight in addition to her special RAM lights. • Check that sidelights alone do NOT fully indicate a vessel underway and making way in normal situations. • Check that any answer you choose matches the usual combination of forward (masthead), side, and aft (stern) lights for a vessel underway and making way.
