BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND What shape(s) is/are required to be shown by a vessel aground?
• Vessels aground vs. at anchor vs. not under command and how their day shapes differ • Which Navigation Rule covers vessels not under command and restricted in their ability to maneuver (day shapes) • The special additional requirement for a vessel that is aground beyond just being "at anchor"
• First recall: what day shape does any vessel at anchor display? Then ask: what extra condition exists when a vessel is aground compared to simply at anchor? • Think about how many separate conditions are being signaled when a vessel is aground, and whether each condition requires its own day shape. • Compare which choices represent a single condition and which represent multiple conditions stacked together.
• Verify in the Navigation Rules which day shape represents "at anchor" during the day. • Verify which day shape represents "vessel not under command" and note the number of balls. • Confirm whether a vessel aground is required to show only the anchor shape or must also indicate loss of control (similar to not under command).
