BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND What shape must be shown on a partly submerged vessel which is being towed?
• Partly submerged vessels being towed and their day shapes • Difference between shapes for towing vessels vs objects/vessels being towed • Relevance of Rule 24 – Towing and Pushing and associated shapes in Annex I/Annex II
• Think about which unit in the Rules talks about shapes for objects or vessels being towed, especially when they are hard to see or low in the water. • Ask yourself: which of these shapes is normally used to indicate dangerous obstructions or something that is partly submerged and could be a hazard to navigation? • Consider: do towing vessels and towed objects show the same shapes, or do they have different day shapes?
• Verify in the Navigation Rules which shape is specified for a partly submerged vessel or object being towed (not the tug). • Check that the shape required is a day shape, black in color, and is distinct from shapes used for vessel status like restricted ability to maneuver. • Confirm that the same requirement applies under both International and Inland rules for such towed obstructions.
