BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND What lights must be shown on a barge being towed astern at night?
• Rule 24 – Towing and Pushing in the Navigation Rules • Difference between lights for a power-driven vessel and lights for the tow • What a vessel being towed astern must show at night when it is not pushing or alongside
• Ask yourself: does a barge being towed astern act like a normal power-driven vessel underway, or does it have a special lighting requirement as a towed object? • Which lights are meant to show the limits of the tow itself versus the identity and aspect of a powered vessel? • Consider what minimum light is needed so another vessel approaching from astern can detect and judge the position of the tow.
• Verify what Rule 24 for a vessel or object being towed astern says about required stern or all-round white lights. • Check whether a non–self-propelled barge under tow is required to show sidelights on its own. • Confirm whether multiple white lights (such as "a white light at each corner") are optional or required for long or wide tows, versus the basic minimum for a single barge being towed astern.
