BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND At night, you see the lights shown in illustration D078RR below. These lights would indicate which vessel?
• COLREGS / Navigation Rules for special vessel light combinations at night (Rules 23-27) • Characteristic patterns: not under command, restricted in ability to maneuver, pilot vessel, fishing vessel • Pay close attention to the color order in the vertical light stack: white–red–white
• List from memory (or notes) what the vertical light patterns are for: not under command, restricted in ability to maneuver, pilot vessel, and fishing vessel. Which of those has three all-round lights? • For each option, write the color sequence top-to-bottom (for example, "not under command = ? over ?"). Compare that sequence carefully with the illustration’s white–red–white stack. • Ask yourself: which of these statuses uses two red lights together, which uses red over white, and which uses red–white–red? Where, if anywhere, does white–red–white appear?
• Verify in Rule 27 (Vessels not under command or restricted in their ability to maneuver) which exact color sequence applies and how many lights are required. • Check Rule 26 (Fishing vessels) for the color order of fishing lights and whether an extra white light is ever placed above and below the red fishing light. • Confirm under Rule 29 (Pilot vessels) what the pilotage duty light pattern is and whether it has two or three all-round lights in a vertical line.
