A patient in shock should NOT be placed in which position?
• Shock position and why it is used • How blood flow to the brain and vital organs is affected by body position • When an unconscious patient’s airway might be at risk
• For each option, think: does this position help blood flow to the brain and vital organs, or does it make the heart work harder? • Consider which position might interfere with breathing or airway protection, especially if the patient is unconscious or vomiting. • Ask yourself: which of these looks more like a recovery/airway-protecting position, and which looks abnormal or unhelpful for circulation?
• Verify which position is typically recommended for treating shock when there are no suspected head, neck, or back injuries. • Check which option could worsen breathing or circulation instead of improving it. • Make sure you know the difference between a recovery position (for unconscious) and shock position (for circulation support).
