A frapping line, shown in the illustration, is indicated by number __________. See illustration SF-0029.
• Frapping line function on lifeboats (what it does during lowering alongside the ship) • Difference between falls, gripes, tricing pendants, and frapping lines • Where a frapping line is led: between the davit head and the boat’s gunwale to snug the boat inboard
• First, identify which numbered part in the drawing looks like the main hoisting falls, then eliminate that choice because a frapping line is NOT a hoisting fall. • Next, look for which line would be used to pull the boat in tight against the ship’s side once it is swung out, rather than to hold it in the stowed position or initially pull it out. • Ask yourself: which numbered line looks slack and ready to be passed around the boat, instead of being a permanent securing line or chain?
• Verify which number shows the hoisting falls running vertically down to the boat and make sure you do NOT pick that. • Identify which number points to the gripes that secure the boat in the stowed position at the cradle; eliminate that from consideration. • Confirm that the frapping line you choose is a line that would be handled by the crew to pull the boat alongside and control its movement, usually a comparatively light line near the mid‑section of the boat.
