A DSC Distress Relay should always be made under the following circumstances:
⢠Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Distress alert and Distress relay procedures per GMDSS practice ⢠The role of the Master in approving distress or relay transmissions ⢠When a coast station acknowledgement changes (or does not change) your duty to relay a distress call
⢠Think about what a DSC Distress relay is actually used for: are you repeating your own distress, or someone elses distress that you received? ⢠Ask: In which option is there a clear need to help ensure the distress alert reaches search and rescue authorities or nearby ships? ⢠Consider whether receiving (or not receiving) a coast station acknowledgement starts or ends your responsibility to relay a distress alert.
⢠Verify which option correctly involves receiving a distress alert from another station and then deciding whether to forward (relay) it. ⢠Check which option mentions Masters approval, and think about why that approval is important for sending a distress-related transmission. ⢠Eliminate any option that suggests no relay is needed just because you think you are too far away, or that only acts after a coast station has already acknowledged.
