A Distress Priority DSC call may be formatted and transmitted specifying and requesting:
• DSC (Digital Selective Calling) Distress Priority format requirements in GMDSS • What optional information can be INCLUDED in a DSC distress alert (e.g., nature of distress, position, follow‑on frequency, type of follow‑up communication) • The difference between voice and narrow‑band direct printing (NBDP/TELEX) as follow‑up methods
• Which of the options allows the most COMPLETE, correctly formatted DSC distress alert without contradicting how a single distress call is structured? • In a single DSC distress call, can you specify BOTH nature of distress AND an alternate working frequency, or must you choose one of them? Similarly, what about position versus alternate frequency/emission? • For a DISTRESS alert, is it normally limited to ONLY voice follow‑up, ONLY TELEX follow‑up, or can it be set up for either depending on the ship’s equipment and situation?
• Check what information fields are PERMITTED in a single DSC distress alert: MMSI, position, time, nature of distress, type of subsequent communication, and/or working frequency. • Verify whether the regulations allow either voice or NBDP/TELEX as follow‑up for a distress alert, or if it must be restricted to only one mode. • Eliminate any choice that wrongly limits follow‑up communications to only ONE mode if the GMDSS standards clearly allow more than one.
