🔍 Key Concepts

• Determine the true bearing of the transit from the two charted lights, independently of the vessel’s earlier fix in step 4. • Convert between true, magnetic, and compass bearing using the stated 9°W variation; compare the resulting deviation with the deviation table. • A magnetic heading table gives deviation by magnetic heading, so establish the relevant magnetic heading before selecting a table entry.

💭 Think About

• What true bearing does the charted alignment of Thimble Shoal Light and Old Point Comfort Light establish, and how does that compare with the reported 265° per standard magnetic compass? • After accounting for 9°W variation, what deviation does the comparison imply, and which magnetic-heading entry in the table is relevant to course 135° psc? • Does the information leave an unexplained difference after applying the chart bearing, variation, and applicable deviation—or not?

✅ Before You Answer

• Do not use the fix from step 4; this transit is established by the two lights’ charted positions. • Keep variation and deviation separate, and apply east/west signs consistently when converting psc to true. • Treat local magnetic disturbance as a possibility only if a real unexplained residual remains after the bearing and compass corrections.
