You are reading the draft marks as shown in illustration D032DG. The water level is at the top of number 8. What is the draft?
• Standard draft mark layout on a ship’s side • How tall the numerals are and what part of the numeral represents the exact foot mark • Relationship between inches and feet (especially 6 inches) on draft marks
• Visualize where the 0-inch point of the 8-foot mark is: is it at the bottom, middle, or top of the number? • If the numeral is 6 inches high, what draft does the top of the number 8 represent relative to the 8-foot mark? • Compare how many inches above 8 feet the waterline would be if it touches the very top of the 8.
• Be sure you know whether the bottom of the numeral or the top of the numeral is the exact whole-foot draft • Confirm the height of each numeral used for standard draft marks (in inches) • Convert that height correctly into feet and inches before matching to the choices.
