Q

With regard to GPS, how can a civilian receiver may be capable of achieving the same accuracy as a military receiver?

🔍 Key Concepts

• Selective Availability (SA) and how it affects civilian GPS accuracy • The effect of satellite geometry and dilution of precision (DOP) on position accuracy • What additional equipment (like Doppler receivers) actually contributes to GPS accuracy

💭 Think About

• Which factor was historically used by the U.S. Department of Defense to intentionally degrade civilian GPS accuracy, and what happens when that factor is removed or set to zero? • How does a high dilution of precision (DOP) usually affect accuracy: does it make it better or worse? • Think about whether having satellites very low on the horizon (below 15° elevation) normally improves or degrades GPS accuracy.

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify what Selective Availability (SA) is and who controlled it • Check whether high HDOP (horizontal dilution of precision) is desirable or undesirable for accuracy • Confirm whether a Doppler receiver is required for civilian GPS units to approach military-level accuracy, or if accuracy is controlled by the signal itself
