🔍 Key Concepts

• Zone of Confidence (ZOC) categories on modern electronic charts (CATZOC) indicate the reliability of depth data and survey quality. • How a “full area search” and depth anomaly expectations relate to survey line spacing, position accuracy, and detection of shoals. • The meaning of each ZOC level: A1/A2 (highest confidence), B (good but not highest), C (lower, incomplete), U (unassessed/unknown).

💭 Think About

• Look at which ZOC categories are associated with incomplete survey coverage or wider line spacing that might miss small shoals. • Consider which ZOC level would most likely include a warning that depth anomalies may be expected rather than unlikely. • Ask yourself: Is “no full area search” the same as “no data at all,” or does it mean “some data, but not thorough enough to rule out anomalies”?

✅ Before You Answer

• Identify which ZOC explicitly indicates lower confidence and possible uncharted features, not just “unknown quality.” • Distinguish between ZOCs that have systematic full coverage versus those based on older, less rigorous surveys. • Verify which level is typically associated with larger depth and position uncertainty while still having some survey information.
