🔍 Key Concepts

• 0400 fix from step 6: 37°14.0′N, 75°40.7′W; compare the plotted position with the relevant maritime-zone limits. • Distinguish the territorial sea (up to 12 nautical miles from the baseline) from the contiguous zone, which is the band beyond the territorial sea extending to 24 nautical miles from the baseline. • Use the chart’s seabed notes and the boundary between Inland and International Navigation Rules to assess the other statements.

💭 Think About

• From the 0400 fix established in step 6, what is your approximate distance and direction from the coast or applicable baseline, and which zone limits does that place you within? • Do not treat the territorial sea and contiguous zone as the same area: does the choice mean being simultaneously in both, or inside the outer limits of each zone? • Do the chart and location support the claims about seabed material, prohibited activities, or Inland Rules?

✅ Before You Answer

• For choice A, interpret the wording as being within the outer limits of both distinct zones, not physically inside both zones at once; the contiguous zone begins seaward of the territorial sea. • Verify the position against charted baselines and zone distances; do not infer zone status from the deviation-table illustration. • Check whether the location is inside or outside the boundary for Inland Rules before evaluating choice D.
