What true course and speed did you make good between 0730 and 0900?
• Course made good vs. course steered (what actually happened over the ground) • Using the DR (dead reckoning) positions at 0730 and 0900 to determine true course • Using distance run over the ground and elapsed time to find speed made good
• On your plotting sheet, what two positions should you connect with a line to find what you actually made good? • How do you convert the direction of that line into a true course (what reference are you using)? • Once you know the distance between those two positions, how do you convert that distance over 1.5 hours into knots?
• Be sure you are measuring from the 0730 position to the 0900 position, not from departure or some other time • When measuring distance, use the latitude scale closest to the middle of the track line • Remember that Speed (knots) = Distance (nautical miles) / Time (hours), and the time here is 1 hour 30 minutes = 1.5 hours
