What provides little or no indication that a vessel is dragging anchor?
• Dragging anchor indications such as changes in bearings and ranges • How a drift lead is used to detect movement of the vessel at anchor • Difference between motion abeam vs. ahead/astern when checking for drag
• Ask yourself: which option describes a condition that could exist even when the anchor is holding properly? • Think about which observations are the most reliable signs that the vessel is actually moving over the ground, not just swinging at anchor. • Consider the direction a drift lead or visual reference should tend if the vessel is truly dragging astern of her anchor.
• For each choice, decide if it directly shows change of position over the ground, not just swinging or sheering. • Check whether an abeam object changing in bearing or range would mean you are moving, not just swinging in an arc. • Decide which sign could reasonably occur while the anchor is still holding fast, giving a misleading sense that you are dragging or not dragging.
