What maintenance function may the holder of a GMDSS Radio Operator license perform, or supervise the performance of, on an Inmarsat-C SES?
• GMDSS Radio Operator license authority vs. technician/maintainer authority • What is considered operational/normal user setup versus technical alignment or internal adjustment • Inmarsat-C SES functions related to safety communications, not hardware repair/calibration
• Look at each choice and ask: Is this something a normal trained operator could reasonably do from the user interface, or does it sound like an internal electronic adjustment a maintainer/technician would do? • Which option involves simply using the equipment correctly so it can communicate with the network, rather than physically servicing it or electronically re‑calibrating it? • For GMDSS operator privileges, are you allowed to open equipment and adjust internal components, or mainly to configure and operate the set as designed?
• Identify which options involve internal electronic calibration or component tuning (these are usually not operator functions). • Identify which options involve physical servicing/cleaning of hardware (often not a licensed radio operator’s specific GMDSS function). • Identify which option is a normal operator configuration step required for the terminal to log into the Inmarsat system and contact the NCS (Network Coordination Station).
