What is the purpose of a bilge well?
• Bilge: the lowest part of a ship where unwanted liquids accumulate • How water and other liquids are removed from a vessel’s hull • Typical features found in a ship’s double bottom versus in the bilge
• Where does water that seeps or leaks inside the hull tend to collect naturally? • Which part of the ship’s structure is designed so that pumps can easily remove accumulated liquids? • Do sounding reference points or access to the shell plating require a special ‘well,’ or is that more associated with drainage and pumping?
• Identify what normally happens to small amounts of leakage, condensation, or wash water in a compartment • Think about which choice best relates to drainage and pumping rather than measurement or access • Eliminate any options that mainly describe measurement or structural access functions, not collection of unwanted liquids
