Question 1 of 31048

What is the minimum required GMT for the DEEP DRILLER in winds less than 70 knots while at a draft of 60 feet?

🔍 Key Concepts

• Review how metacentric height (GM or GMT) relates to initial stability of a vessel or MODU (Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit). • Consider how operating limits are often given in the Stability Manual or Operations Manual as tables for different drafts and wind speeds. • Think about the difference between a very small GM, a moderate GM, and a very large GM, and what that implies for comfort vs. safety.

💭 Think About

• Look at the answer choices and ask: which values are clearly too small to safely resist heeling moments from wind and sea at 60 feet draft, and which might be unrealistically large for a semi-submersible? • Consider what a minimum required GM represents: is it usually a tiny margin or a more substantial stability requirement for harsh environments? • Compare the options in terms of order of magnitude. Is a fraction of a foot likely for a harsh-environment MODU, or are several feet of GM more typical?

✅ Before You Answer

• Verify that the units of GM in the stability documentation are in feet, just like the answers. • Check whether your stability references for similar semi-submersible rigs show minimum GM in the range of inches, a couple of feet, or many feet for operations in lower wind speeds (< 70 knots). • Confirm that the chosen value seems consistent with other operating conditions (e.g., higher wind speeds would logically require an equal or greater GM, not less).
